DIY Horsehair Keepsake

This little keepsake was such a fun, simple way to use a few clippings from my pony Mixie’s hair and turn them into something special I keep.

I’ve seen some gorgeous horsehair jewelry pieces over the years, there are seriously talented artists out there making stunning work!

While this project isn’t that level of fancy, it was a sweet way to repurpose some of Mixie’s summer bang trim into a one-of-a-kind charm.

And of course, I painted the inside of the wooden pendant a pretty blue, to help everything pop.

What I Used:

  • A small chunk of Mixie’s hair (I just used her bangs)

  • A wooden pendant with a glass cabochon (Amazon has them HERE)

  • Craft paint (I used FolkArt Multi-Surface in Hawaiian Surf)

  • Mod Podge

  • Scissors

  • Necklace chain

  • A small paintbrush

  • A towel and hair shampoo to clean the hair first

What I Did:

I gave Mixie her annual bang trim (which keeps her eyes clear and makes her look like a tiny supermodel).

After the cut, I washed the hair with a little shampoo in the sink and let it dry overnight.

Next, I painted the inside of my wood pendant and let that dry, too.

When the pendant was dry and ready, I used Mod Podge to stick a few trimmed strands of hair inside the pendant over the painted background.

Once the hair was arranged, I added more Mod Podge to the back of the glass cabochon and pressed it down over the hair.

Once dry, I added a simple beaded chain I had on hand, and I was done!

It’s definitely not “professional” quality, but it’s personal, sweet, and totally handmade.

I love that it’s a little lucky charm I can keep close until the day I might want to commission a more detailed piece from a horsehair artist.

For now, this one’s good enough for me and makes a great little craft idea for any horse fan.
