Many years ago, when my boys were little, my parents would take them out to shop for gifts for Paul and me during the holidays, like Christmas.
One year, they gifted me an adorable salt and pepper shaker set featuring little squirrels, which I'm using in this DIY tassel project.
I’ve been spotting these DIY salt and pepper shakers all over Pinterest, and I couldn’t resist jumping on the bandwagon with my cute little squirrels!
Seriously, how adorable are these?
AND here’s a quick little tip to save you some trouble: make sure the holes of the salt and pepper shakers are at the top, not on the side.
I’ve got a set of chicken shakers with the holes in the neck /side area, and I'd have to drill a hole for this project to work on them.
So, trust me, for this tassel project to a lot easier, go for shakers with holes at the top.

HERE'S HOW EASY IT IS TO MAKE SALT AND PEPPER TASSELS
First, cut your colorful ribbon into strips about 6-8 inches long.
I used four different ribbon colors: 4 lace strips, 4 thin white strips, 2 thin lime green strips, and 3 velvet peacock blue strips for each tassel.
Next, lay them out in a pattern, making an "X" and then lay one through the center until all the colors are arranged in this pattern.
AH NUTS! LET'S FINISH UP THIS PROJECT!
I’m not sure why I kept thinking “Ah nuts” as I turned these little squirrels into salt and pepper shaker tassels, but I did.
So, I headed to my craft supplies for letter beads and easily strung them onto the top string.
I tied a small knot between “Ah” and “Nuts” to create a space.
That “Ah Nuts” just adds such a quirky touch and makes me smile (and I hope it does the same for you).
What do you think?
Do you have some salt and pepper shakers lying around that could use a little tassel jazz?
Or maybe you're looking for a fun, quick project that's perfect for when the boredom sets in!
This is a super easy project, and the kids can get in on the fun, too.
You could even turn these into DIY Christmas ornaments!
I’m hanging mine in the kitchen window to add a little quirky fun to the space.
XOXO
Emily
